What I've Learned
Experience has taught me that there is more wisdom between us than there is within us. Therefore, I believe it is imperative for elected officials to know what matters most to the people in their districts – regardless of political affiliation. I also believe that each person in this district brings different skills and talents to the table. Consequently, it is important that I meet as many people in the district as possible and that I bring as many people as I can into my campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives.

I know there is abundance in York, as well as in this state and in this country, but I also know there is growing scarcity and hardship all around us. Being a member of the York County Prevention Collaborative has allowed me to meet regularly with human services workers who deal with child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, sexual assault, alcohol and substance abuse in York County. I have learned that individuals and families in every corner of the county struggle today for a basic standard of living. We have many wonderful and peaceable communities in Maine but I also know we are not altogether free of fear and suspicion. I joined the York Diversity Forum because I saw an organization deeply committed to raising a peaceful, active voice promoting understanding and acceptance. I believe in the inherent importance of diversity.

In addition to my work with these two organizations, I also serve as elected Chair of the Town’s Parks and Recreation Board, having been appointed to the Board by the Town’s Selectmen. In this capacity I have had the opportunity to see what happens when people go beyond their personal concerns and unite with others to create a healthier and more active community. This lesson has been driven home to me also by my work on the Board of the KEYS Community Wellness Coalition, which is focused this year on the important social issues of education, sustainable development, and community health. Additionally, I serve on the Executive Board of the Seacoast Democrats and also as an active member of the York County Democratic Committee. Taking an active role in one’s community is the best way I have found to put my beliefs into practice. Furthering that end, I believe that I can best serve my community and our greater society by working in our state Legislature.
